Job Description


Veterans Employment is seeking an experienced and motivated veteran with extensive experience in instrumentation, controls, PLCs and associated electrical automation equipment for a company heavily invested in state of the art automation equipment.



The Lead Engineering Technician is responsible for managing preventative maintenance cycles and guiding the engineering team in designing and implementing solutions for difficult problems. Must have the ability to handle multiple projects and coordinate with vendors.



  • Install, maintain, and troubleshoot control components/systems such as: relay logic, ladder logic diagrams, photo eyes, motor starters, relays, limit switches, proximity sensors, timers, solenoids, Servo drives, frequency inverters, linear drives, tachometers, and encoders

  • Maintain and troubleshoot all conveyor systems, electrical and mechanical

  • Perform and audit Preventative and Corrective Maintenance procedures/practices

  • Be familiar with, maintain and operate boilers and steam systems

  • Conduct maintenance and higher-level troubleshooting of automation equipment and associated support systems

  • Act as a technical consultant for capital projects inside the building

  • Troubleshoot PLC programs including using ladder logic, components (CPU back plains, I/O boards, counters, modules, and devices) and communications modules (Ethernet, Can-bus, etc.)

  • Mentor technicians by providing guidance and directions to help them achieve goals

  • Maintain and troubleshoot power distribution systems, branch circuits, lighting systems, transformers, and wiring methods and materials up to 480V

  • Develop/implement work plans for repair of critical assets

  • Daily Work planning to include coordinating with Operations, locating parts/tools for repair, scheduling time with equipment, etc.



  • Military technical training in Electronics, Electrical, Nuclear or other related field preferred

  • Degree or certifications from vocational school or military schooling in automation and PLCs

  • Experience managing large scale projects

  • Ability to work all days/shifts, and overtime in support of 24/7 operations, including holidays

  • Advanced skills in the following areas:

    • Automated conveyor mechanical/control systems: Install, maintain, and troubleshoot

    • Industrial electrical: Install, maintain, and troubleshoot

    • Maintain and operate boilers and steam systems

    • Motor Controls including motor starters, Variable Frequency Drives, DC drives, servo-drives and standard electrical components

    • Programmable Logic Control (PLC) programs

    • National Electrical Code (NEC) and NFPA 70E

  • Ability to identify, maintain, troubleshoot, and modify automation system components and controls. Including but not limited to:

    • PLC components using required programs such as AB RS LOGIX 5000 and vendor provided software

  • Supervisory and/or management experience
